Things are getting real

Today we visited Liberation Tiny Homes in Leola, PA, to see some models in production and to talk seriously about building our own tiny home.

Tiny homes aren't that TINY

Real life sucks

So- here we are...Gretta came home last weekend and we did amazing work in moving forward. Gretta worked that Architecture degree and has AUTOCADD going for it...in fact, we are hitting V2 of our plans. Now- why would you think I had access to the plans? Gretta was going to post them but work and real life got in the way...so I will post this, an image she texted to me.

At first we planned on a 28' trailer yet realized it would be width that would work better so we downsized to a 24' trailer for huge savings and only a double axel. The big takeaway from this is that we are planning a sleeping loft and a storage loft connected with a 2' storage level. We are quiet sure a composting toilet is in the mix, a 3/4 stove and refrigerator, stackable washer/dryer, wet room lavatory, stairs (maybe) to sleeping loft, and I am gonna build a couch that doubles as a full size mattes bed. So, consider yourself up to date as of Feb 6, 2017.
Orin had another knee replaced today so lets send the ol' boy some love.

You had to see this coming...

So...in my usual "pre work research" part of the day I sit at my desk, drink black coffee and most of the time- scoff down leftovers from last nights dinner. That being said, took the pup for a run, and am putting off a shower until time for work. Cold pizza and coffee is NOT as good as you would think. Anywaaaaayyyy...
It seems 84Lumber is jumping on the band wagon of TINY LIVING with their own models. There are 3 options for each 200ft home ranging from trailer with plans, Tiny Shell on trailer with plans (might be a sweet spot for most people), or complete. This seems to recall past times when Sears sold kit homes! Oh how time folds in on itself.

Some of the homes have a 3D viewer that is super nice to check out...I burned time enough for 1/2 cup of coffee just playing with one plan.



More ideas to check out

Let the ideas begin

I am so excited to begin collecting our ideas in a single place. I see examples in various posts and websites, thinking...I'll remember that. But, let's be real. I'll only remember, "There was a cool stair idea...Let me see if I can find it again..."

This idea is worth putting in the idea pile. Though we are only new to the "tiny house" conversation, I can only imagine that the choice between stairs and ladder must have pros and cons in every direction. This idea to put storage in a moveable portion of the stair solves some problems I can imagine in trying to use a fixed stair for the storage from the risers.

However, some issues I can imagine would be securing the stair portion, even with locks on the casters, to prevent it from moving. Perhaps a latch of some sort attached to the wall would help. 

Also, the visual disconnect between this stair and the wall against the stairs gives it the appearance that it is incomplete/unfinished. Nonetheless, it's an interesting idea to keep in mind!

Gretta and I have had a fun 7 1/2yr marriage thus far and a TINY HOME is our next challenge in moving forward as a couple. Why TINY? Currently we both are working in exactly the fields (college education and program administration) we wanted yet live 5hrs apart in two different states. I've met married couples who would welcome this kind of space- as best friends, this is the worst. So- lets start a list to qualify our dream!!! Here we go...

1 We both pay rent! I live in a crappy apartment in State College, and Gretta lives in the back of a house in Red Hook, NY. Over 1,200 in rent for places neither one likes.

2 We both KINDA live tiny as it is... Both are currently pairing down all things and it is feeling pretty good so far. If you are ~5'11" you may want to check out the State College Goodwill store.

3 ONE of us is going to have to give up our job so we can live together...a TINY HOME will make it easier financially for that to happen.

4 We both love a challenge. Living tiny will be a challenge that we can rally around.

5 Most people we know kinda see it as an inevitability with us...not sure what that means.

6 One day we dream to both work at the same school/area. A TINY HOME will be manageable to move to where ever that is.

Why have a blog dealing with this? Well, it should help us to keep ideas together, keep it real, and let those of you willing to read feel connected to the process.
